Designing A Bedroom To Relax In

If your bedroom is in need of a change to make it that relaxing, romantic room you dream of then looking at John Lewis bedroom furniture is a good place to start.

Bedrooms have always predominantly been used as a place to sleep, however this particular room of the house is now being used as a place to unwind, relax and escape. After a long day at work or with a demanding family, a little time in the bedroom can bring about that moment of calm you have been waiting for. With so many styles of furniture available, you can spend hours designing a romantic and relaxing room that will suit all of your bedroom needs.

If you are looking to give it a sensual feel then you need to consider certain colours that will help achieve this like shades of cream, peach, pink and red. The addition of oval mirrors can help create beautiful reflections when candles are placed close to them. For others, the room can be just as easily converted into a room where a good book can be read on a strategically placed chair or on the bed itself; however this idea goes back to the days when bedrooms were used far more than they are today.

Lighting is another important consideration when looking at the décor of your bedroom. For a relaxing ambiance you want to avoid any bright lights. Similarly, if you like to use your bedroom as a place to read you don’t want dim lights which will cause you to strain your eyes…this won’t be the relaxing experience you are looking for. Therefore, plenty of soft strategically placed lighting is the best way forward. If you have a designated reading area or dressing table, lighting should be placed here and possible beside the bed. Shade such as ivory and amber will create a soft, sensual effect without being too bright or too dark.

I know from experience that lying or sitting on the bed to read will inevitably lead to me falling asleep within about 10 minutes, therefore a comfortable chair with a small table and reading light is a good addition. Many therapists believe that designating a place for a particular function is a good way to organise your behaviour. We are generally programmed to believe that a bed is for sleeping, by designating an average of 8 hours of sleeping in our bed you are telling your body it is now time to sleep and recharge those batteries. By spending additional time in or on your bed, the boundaries of sleep and being awake are confused which can lead to sleeping at the wrong times of day and not sleeping when you should or need to (the dreaded insomnia).

Considering the bedroom is your space to escape and relax, the design of your bedroom should be based on the things you like. You may wish to include hotel-like additions; a TV, music facility, small refrigerator, tea and coffee making facilities, or a small writing desk. The list of possibilities is endless but the most important thing is to ensure the additions you have in your bedroom are there to help you to relax and unwind. With so many options available you are sure to produce a relaxing and romantic bedroom design that suits you.
