Puppy Training Classes
Group Puppy training classes are a great way to get started with both obedience training and socializing your new puppy. You can get started early-puppies as young as 6 weeks of age are able to learn new tricks. There is no better time to get started with the socializing and basic obedience training of your puppy.
I noticed that my dogs that I had not trained early on were less well behaved than the ones I got an early start with in group classes. I had two very aggressive dogs prior to using group training classes. Unfortunately, I didn’t even start training them until they had already had enough time to develop aggression issues. With the pups I have taken to early group puppy training lessons, thanks to the socializing, none of them has developed an aggression problem.
While your puppy was still in the litter with his siblings and the Mama dog, he was constantly getting lessons in doggy manners through his interactions with the other puppies and Mama. If a puppy gets too rambunctious the other puppies will team up on him to chill him out, or his Mama will lay down the law. For example, the Mama will grab him by the scruff of his neck and hold him still till he relaxes and submits. This is how puppy’s normally learn their guidelines. Just like our kids, puppies will greatly benefit from some guidelines to learn good behavior.
Since your puppy now depends on you for socialization, you need to make sure he is exposed to other dogs and people and reduce the chance he grows up isolated and aggressive. Since dogs are a very social animal, they enjoy companionship and are less well balanced without it. It is easy to see why it is that a puppy or dog that is kept confined and away from interaction with other puppies or dogs or people is much more likely to become aggressive. I feel that the 2 aggressive dogs I had earlier became that way due to isolation.
Getting started with puppy training in a group class is the smart time to begin his training-you are training your pup before he has picked up any bad behavior habits. In addition to socializing your pup you will be learning the basic commands and hand signals so you can continue your puppy’s training daily at home. The dogs I had earlier had problems with were obedience trained-just didn’t have a clue in a social situation. A dog that is well balanced both socially and with obedience training fits well in any type of social situation.I have seen from personal experience that a puppy with the benefits of going to a group training class-he is going to be more comfortable in later social situations with people and dogs he hasn’t met before.
Even as young as 6 weeks your puppy is capable of learning the obedience basics. You should check out the amazing videos on YouTube of little puppies doing all kinds of tricks to see how early they can learn.
Try out this one important tip of bringing your puppy to group training class, and you are very unlikely to later have an aggressive dog. Look up information on group puppy training courses in your area and use one that uses positive reinforcement training only. Besides being a great way to get an early start with training and socializing, my puppy and I both loved going to the classes.
