My Favorite Present to Give: Truly Good Food
I have to admit, I am not a great shopping enthusiast. Except around the Christmas and Channukah holidays, I hate the parking problems, I don’t enjoy browsing aisle after aisle looking for something that would be just perfect for Grandma or Uncle Arthur. I certainly do not like standing on line with frustrated people killing time for the lone employee to handle yet another exchange. During the holidays, I enjoy strolling through stores just people watching, without being weighted down with packages. The experience for whatever reason puts me into a holiday mood, but I do my actual shopping and buying almost entirely on the Internet. That’s a practice I developed in the very early years of the Web.
Online shopping didn’t save my life all by itself. Just because I started using the Web before any of my friends, I still had to make the decisions. And then, around five years ago, or so, I discovered food.
That wasn’t very honestly phrased, because I discovered food when I was still an infant. But I didn’t discover food as a gift idea until recently. You see, at that time I received a gift basket full of hardly edible sausages, processed cheese spreads (mostly chemicals I think) and crackers that were about as crunchy as a rock. However, the poor quality of what passed as food in that gift turned out to be my inspiration. “What,” I thought, “If I had received genuinely good food?” How different that would have been, and how much I would have enjoyed it.
Since then, I have been busy conducting research (that’s just my word for “sampling”). I have found online vendors who offer genuine quality for about the same price that you can get that synthetic stuff at the mall. (You know the one I mean, but I’m not about to open myself to a libel or slander charge by naming the brand.) Just like the mall kiosks, the online shops handle all the shipping, gift cards, everything. I know that my gifts will be exceptionally pleasant surprises for all of my gift recipients.
The wide selection of quality gift foods available is truly remarkable. It ranges from live lobster dinners to a gourmet fruit basket; from cookie bouquets to live lobsters; from wine gift baskets to imported caviar or fine Wisconsin cheeses.
For those on my gift list who live nearby, I usually assemble my own gift baskets. Even in those cases, the Internet comes to my rescue with helpful suggestions about how to make my self-assembled gift foods more interesting. The available articles also have great gift ideas for special people who often happen to be especially difficult when it comes to choosing a gift.
If you happen to see me walking down a store aisle with a huge smile on my face when everybody else seems frantic, you will now know how I can be cheerful when surrounded by panic. But don’t tell my Uncle Arthur.
Hard Times Call for Practical Gifts
A few days ago, I talked with a family friend who recently learned that his huge manufacturing company was closing his plant. He is actually more fortunat than most of his co-workers. He very recently reached the magic age at which he qualifies for early retirement, so he will continue to have a steady income. Those who did not reach that milestone of the specified number of years with the company will get a small severance package and be left to search for a job in that difficult market. That caused me to think about giving gifts for special occasions to those people who are finding themselves in tough situations. I came up with a few ideas that make more sense than a piece of home decor or a new tie. Here are some of them:
A fresh fruit gift basket is healthy, beautiful, delicious and always enjoyed. If you live near your gift recipient, you can find a lovely basket or other attractive container and fill it with fruit that is in season in your region of the country, obtained at a farmers market, and fill it out with a few exotic fruits picked up at your local super market. If your loved one is farther away, you can arrange for any of a large range of beautiful fruit gift baskets to be delivered to the recipient’s home. It will help them to reduce their grocery bill on their next trip to the super market.
A special meal is another way to remember a special occasion or holiday. One possibility might be to take the friend or family member to a popular local restaurant. If price is no object to you, be sure to recommend a couple of the more expensive entrees on the menu, so that your guests know that they should not worry about ordering what they want. For example, you might say something like, “The crab legs are wonderful here, but, if you don’t like seafood, try the tender and tasty filet mignon.” If they live too far away for that, you can actually find delicious, gourmet, chef-prepared meals online that arrive frozen and can be heated in almost no time. (I actually keep my freezer stocked with these.)
A final recommendation is a scrumptious dessert. Now, lets face it, nobody should indluge in too many desserts, but on a birthday, anniversary or holiday, everyone deserves a chance to feel a little pampered. Bake cookies, if that is a skill of yours, and hand deliver or have them delivered. For something a little more special consider giving them a delicious pie or a New York cheesecake. Whether you make it yourself or have others do the work for you doesn’t matter. It will be appreciated and definitely enjoyed either way.
You’ll notice a common feature in these suggestions. They all involve food. Someone who is going through a difficult time may not want to accept charity, but nobody can reject a genuinely special gift. If it reduces the grocery bill by a bit, so much the better.
Do You Know What Your Woman Wants?
I’m a chick who knows how to shop for a man, and I prepared this for you guys.
Something happens to dudes when they go to a mall. Women love the mere thought of going shopping. Men on the other hand would rather walk in with a specific store list, map, and the nearest escape route (preferably to a bar). They feel like they’ve been kicked in the huevos. It isn’t fair and there is just too much stuff…
Men, I know your brain feels cloudy merely thinking about shopping for your lady. Just brew up some organic coffee and let me do all the work.
A little hint to you girls, if you have something in mind write it down and paste it to your man’s forehead! Try to keep your list down to just a few things. List your items in ascending price order and where to get the items. You must make sure he knows where the list is and keep it updated! Make it easy on your dude. Tell him your special colors and dress size.
If you don’t have a list to go on, I have five options that should work for about 80% of women. If you are thinking you’ll take the easy way out and buy gift cards – Don’t! Gift cards should only be given to your lady IF she requests them! Also, clothing is completely off limits unless we have sent you in for a specific item, in a specific color and specific size. We have to try on an item and see how it, and the two sizes above and below, fit. Trust me, you don’t know us that well.
My favorite gift is a flower arrangement with a love letter attached. An extravagant meal at a fine restaurant will get you major brownie points. Make sure you think through every detail. You may want to consider reserving a room at a fancy hotel.
Another one of my favorite gifts is a spa treatment, but if you can’t afford a day at the spa then you can always buy her some scented bath salts, romantic candles and a high quality bath robe. A high end bath robe can be expensive so it’s best to shop around.
None of these ideas sound good to you? Think sweet! Chocolate and gourmet coffee are your friend. Nearly any woman will melt at the mention of gourmet chocolate and coffee. For a twist you may want to consider Fair Trade chocolates and Fair Trade coffee. An excellent option for the girl that loves her coffee is a coffee of the month club membership from a gourmet coffee roaster. Coffee clubs are great way to sample through lots of different coffees. I must point out that you must stick with gourmet coffee (no canned stuff) and boxed gourmet chocolates.
Another option is an expensive pen and leather bound planner or journal. No one likes to be without a pen, or be stuck with one that only works intermittently. Even more frustrating is to hunt for a pen, then find one that doesn’t work. Whatever you do, make sure you purchase a high quality pen. If you opt for a journal over a planner get one that has plenty of pages, but not so big that she can’t hold it.
Let’s say your woman likes plants, then you can buy her one of her favorites. Potted flowers are an attractive alternative to cut flowers. It’s a beautiful, living reminder that you are thinking about your girl.
Men, don’t be afraid to ask a women what she wants. Every woman knows what she wants! Make sure she doesn’t request something too expensive! Any of the above mentioned ideas may be catered to fit almost any women at any point in her life. Women want to be pampered and adored. We want gifts that reflect our style, and not yours. If all else fails, then a framed picture of the two of you will be enough to get you through this holiday.
If you want an easy out you can to check out some of the coffee gifts at Nectar of Life Coffee. They’ve got excellent Fair Trade organic coffee and chocolate!
Homemade Retirement Gifts
If someone you know is retiring and you are considering a homemade retirement gift instead of buying a gift, then you may want to contemplate a funny gift you could give. A lot of retirements will focus on humor instead of being serious. However, you want the gift to also be special for your friend. When making a gift homemade you will also be giving a gift that is unique, and hopefully more cost effective since you are making the gift yourself.
By making a gift, you will be able to make your gift more personal and also make it so others will know you spent time and thought on your retirement gift. The best way to come up with your gift would be to think about what likes, interests and hobbies the retiree has. Brainstorm a list and after creating the list you will need to begin marrowing the list down.If you want to create a gift that also has a bit of humor in it, then brainstorm ideas that will be easier to incorporate humor into. After all if the retiree is going to do something very serious after retirement like work with his church, that won’t provide you with a funny idea. However, if he plans to live on the golf course then you can find a way to make the gift funny.
You of course don’t want your gift to be the same as everyone elses, you want your gift to be unique. That will be much easier when you are making a homemade retirement gift. For instance if you like needle work you could buy a plan shirt and put a slogan on it such as “golf course or bust” if the retiree likes golf. If you are learning to crochet you might want to think of a crocheted golf club cover. The best way to introduce humor in that case would be to make the cover with a cartoon head or something that is personal to the retiree.
The ideas for gifts are unlimited when you contemplate a homemade retirement gift and provided you enjoy crafting creating your homemade gift will be easy for you.Perhaps you are not the type of person who is into crafts, in which case you would need to consider a different way of making your gift. Many people love chocolate so you could consider making homemade fudge and presenting it as your gift. It may lack the humor element, but you could always present it in a box that has been designed towards humor.
The ideas are endless, but when you make a homemade gift, you have the advantage of creating a personal, unique, and thoughtful gift rather then just purchasing a gift. Get your creative juices flowing and enjoy your retirement party!
