Computer games could help to prevent eye problems

After years of being told that video games are bad for your health and especially your eyes, a new study has proved that in fact playing some games may actually help improve your vision, and could even prevent you from needing glasses in the future. The study, conducted by the University of Rochester, demonstrates that playing certain games improves a person’s contrast sensitivity function, or their ability to distinguish easily between different shades of grey. But can that really mean the game has actually improved your eyesight?

Shades of grey might not sound particularly ground-breaking, but contrast sensitivity is one of the most easily damaged functions of the human eye. People who suffer from low contrast sensitivity find it harder to see at night or to pick out small details like spots on clothing, and often the only way to treat the problem is with increasing strength prescription glasses or eye surgery. It’s now believed that computer games could be used methodically to train the eyes to develop these skills, and that the same method could even be used to treat people who suffer from Amblyopia or ‘lazy eye’, which affects the brain’s ability to correctly register signals from one eye.

But not all video games are thought to have this effect. The study compared different types of games by testing young adults who did not normally play games both before and after a period of playing them regularly. The results suggested that subjects who played first-person shooter or action games like Call of Duty showed a 43 per cent improvement on average, whereas those who played non-action games like The Sims 2 showed hardly any.

So if gaming could help us avoid eye problems should we all be rushing out to buy an XBOX with as many action games as we can find to ensure that our designer sunglasses will remain our only visual aids far into our future? Well, no. For a start the study makes a point that not all action games will work, in other words, most of them probably won’t. Not to mention the fact that although these games may help develop some areas of your sight, it’s still not advisable to be sitting in front of a screen for long periods of time, or to allow gaming to replace other activities that are necessary to staying fit and healthy. In theory it’s a nice idea, but it’s important to remember that it’s just as possible that video games could be harmful in other ways.

Five Tips for Glasses Wearers: How to Keep Your Eyes Healthy

So many of us these days have vision problems are need to wear glasses or corrective lenses. A recent study revealed that as much as 50 per cent of the US population is short sighted. I’m sure I certainly see a lot more kids wearing glasses at school these days than there were when I was growing up. Given all of this it is more and more important to look after your eyes properly and make sure your lifestyle isn’t making your vision worse. So I thought I’d share my top 5 tips for healthier eyes:

Get your vision checked regularly.

It is advisable to schedule a visit to your optician at least once every year as some eye problems can often go unnoticed until it is too late. Getting regular eye tests can prevent the need for costly corrective treatments in the future so make sure you always follow your optician’s advice – if they say you need prescription glasses, start wearing them straight away.

If you need glasses, always make sure you wear them!

It doesn’t matter whether you think they look good or not, if your optician has told you that you need glasses then you need to be wearing them. Not wearing them can damage your eyes further and will usually only lead to you needing an even stronger prescription later. If you don’t like the way they look shop around, there are hundreds of different frames available and there is sure to be something that will suit you.

Keep a healthy diet for your eyes

Research has proven that certain vitamins and nutrients are good for your eyesight, so making sure that your diet contains plenty of vitamins A, C and E, folic acid, selenium and zinc could help prevent vision problems in the future. If your prescription is very low (-0.25) it’s possible that your sight could even be corrected by changing to a diet rich in these nutrients.

Always protect your eyes fron the sun

It sounds really obvious to say that UV rays can cause severe damage to your eyes, yet hundreds of people still allow this to happen to them every year. Sunglasses are an absolute must when going out in the sun, whether you have existing vision problems or not. With an endless range of designer sunglasses on the market, it’s easy to find a pair that you like and that will give you the all-important protection you need.

Give them regular breaks!

If you spend a lot of time at your computer throughout the day, it’s important that you give your eyes regular breaks. Just closing your eyes or focusing on a distant object for 10 seconds once an hour can make a really big difference and helps to prevent headaches and vision problems associated with prolonged use of a screen. Don’t forget these problems don’t just happen at work, the same applies to watching TV and playing computer games too!

Information On Flair Bartenders

Setting up your own bar is actually quite easy to do.  There are however, a few things that good bartenders need to know to run a bar efficiently.  In order for a bar to succeed, you’ll need to have the basic wines, liquors, and spirits – along with the right equipment.  Although these things are essential, bartenders also need the proper technique for mixing drinks and cocktails as well.

With bartending, the location of the bar is very important.  The bar should be placed in an area that is easy to reach and provides plenty of space behind it.  There should be plenty of room for glasses and drinks, along with a chair or two as well.  The bartender has to learn the area behind the bar, and know everything about it.  Bartenders need to know their area well – and how to perform their mixing duties when business heats up.

Another job bartenders have is knowing their drinks.  Bartenders are responsible for serving and mixing drinks, which is a wide variety to say the least.  It can be nearly impossible to know every possible drink mixture, why is why most bartenders use mixing lists hidden under the bar to help them know what goes in each drink.

Bartenders don’t have a lot of time to mix drinks, which makes it nearly impossible to read each and every label. To come out of this situation, the best thing would be to arrange you alcohol and drinks properly, so that you know where everything is.  This way, when business picks up and you find yourself short on time – you’ll know where everything is.

To become a successful bartender, or mixologist, it takes years of practice.  There are several styles of bartending as well, including the well known and very impressive flair style.  Flair bartending involves very impressive techniques and tricks, which will leave customers truly amazed.  Flair is the hardest style of bartending to perfect, taking years and years of practice.  Flair bartenders all around the world will tell you that flair brings the most crowds – although it can also cost a lot of money in broken bottles along the way!

Each and every bar should also have the basic spirits, such as Tequila, Vodka, Rum, and Gin.  There should be also be fruit juices on hand as well, such as lemon juice, orange juice, and even pineapple juice.  Almost all mixed drinks require juice, such as screwdrivers – which require both Vodka and orange juice.  Mixed drinks are very popular, making it essential for the bartender to be a good mixologist – and have the right materials on hand at all times.

A lot of drinks that bartenders mix will require special gadgets such as shakers, measuring cups, rinsing bowls, and straws.  Shakers are the most commonly used gadget, as they are essential for mixing alcohol.  Bartenders will also need to keep cloth on hand as well, to quickly clean up spills and wipe down the mixing area from time to time.

As a career, bartending can provide you with a lot of money.  If you go to college and learn the techniques required for bartending, you can make more money than you ever thought possible.  The job is high paying, a lot of fun, and a great way to meet new people.  There are a lot of colleges and universities that offer bartending, or you can study online.  No matter which way you go – bartending will be a lot of fun and will take you far in life as an exciting career.

Mad Mickey Should have Won the Oscar – Why Didn’t He?

Mickey Rourke at the Independent Spirit Awards

One more year goes past, and with it another Oscars. The awards pretty much got handed out as expected. Slumdog Millionaire swept the board and Kate Winslet finally got the Academy’s recognition she deserves. The nights biggest shock, which frankly disappointed me, was that the crazy and unpredictable Mickey Rourke didn’t add to his Golden Globes, BAFTA and Spirit triumphs as expected. For me though I was really looking forward to seeing Mickey Rourke crazy things up again with yet another slightly insane acceptance speech.

Ultimately it was Sean Penn, not Rourke, who got the gong for his excellent performance as Harvey Milk. It would be harsh to say that Sean Penn did not deserve to win. Quite the opposite – the role was a brilliant and important one. The Academy Awards are so often full of contrived and rehearsed publicity stunts – am I alone in loving the madness that Rourke brings with him?

While the female stars on the red carpet can turn up in all kinds of jaw dropping outfits, with men it’s usually the same old black tuxedo for everyone. But Mickey Rourke went against the grain by showing up in a shabby chic white tux with his shirt open. Of course he also wore his trademark designer sunglasses which have become part of his image in the awards season. And the most classic of all, he wore a picture of his beloved dead dog Loki on a necklace, which he spent more time talking about than any other subject!

We were due for another wacky and memorable acceptance speech if Mickey Rourke had got the award.  Who knows what he would have come out with on the stage, chihuahua memorial necklace, glasses and all? His performance at the Golden Globes will live long in the memory. And, the day before the Oscars, he was outrageous once again in accepting his Best Actor award at the Spirit awards.

I reckon there was some political goings on in the Academy that stopped Mickey from getting the award. Mickey himself had predicted he woudldn’t win because he’s pissed off too many hollywood hotshots in the past. “I stupidly said acting wasn’t a job for a real man. I threatened producers, raged at directors, forgot my agent’s name. I really burned my bridges. And a lot of people have long memories,” Mickey predicted on the Friday before the ceremony.

Sean Penn does deserve bonus points – he’s never a dull guy and his acceptance speech was interesting to say the least. First he thanked “you commie, homo-loving sons of guns”! Penn then pulled out a small scribbled bit of paper, donned his prescription glasses, and after a few thank-yous proceeded with an impassioned plea for equal rights for gays and against the ban on gay marriages. Not quite as entertaining as Mad Mickey would have been – but better than gushing and thanking his mother for bringing him into this wonderful world.

Bring on the next chapter in the Rourke comeback saga!

Sunglasses – A Guide You Need to Think before You Shop

Sunglasses are an accessory item that is really well-known. A lot of people wear those for their helpfulness and functions while some others just for fashion requirement or appearance complement. No matter what is your reason in wearing sunglasses, it is helpful to be well-informed on this item as regards the enormous amount of both sorts and brands before you decide to buy for a pair yourself.

There are some matters especially that you need to consider before buy sunglasses. Those are going to support you to confine the choices and get the best pair of sunglasses for you.

UV Protection

When purchasing sunglasses, one of the most important factors to mull over is the UV protection that they serve. Make certain that your sunglasses are able to protect your eyes from the dangerous UV rays of the sun. This is important for several reasons but more than anything since the UV radiation of the sun is an element of sunshine that contributes to eye sickness.

Material

The material of the sunglasses are built of, is also an important thing to mull over. This is because it is going to have a serious influence on how long the glasses are going to last you and how comfortable they are going to be. Commonly the higher quality the glasses the heavier they will be.

Tints

The tint of the sunglasses is also very vital here. Colors are applied to the sunglass lenses to help absorb the light that passes through them, safeguarding your eyes from it as a result. The color that you select is basically nothing more than personal taste, but there are still some essential aspects that you are going to have to consider here.

Some of the most well-known tints are brown and amber tints. These are two of most excellent colors for lessening glare and securing the eyes from radiation of UV. Green tinted glasses are very well-liked and aid filter out blue light. What’s more, they also give good contrast among options.

Polarized Sunglasses

Another alternative is to shop for polarized sunglasses, which support to decrease the glare that is built when light bounces off flat roads and water. These are great glasses for people who spend many time on the road driving, also for boaters who need to be able to see where they are driving even in the brightest sunlight.

In fact, there are still many things you require to understand about sunglasses. Want to know more important part in purchasing for sunglasses?

Red Carpet Addictions: Designer Sunglasses

Celebrity Sunglasses on Youtube

One thing about celebrities is that they never seem to leave home without their trusty pair of designer sunglasses. Yes, that includes being indoors, out in the middle of the night, or even at their favourite night club. They're inseperable companions, like flies on elephants. In fact, given the Spears / Hilton incidents of late, celebrities are now more likely to leave home with a pair of shades than with underwear.

But why? By delving into the complex and bewildering psyche of the celebrity mind, we try to answer this age-old riddle:

  1. So they don’t get recognised. Celebrities can't risk getting mobbed by crazed fans on every street corner now can they? Eggheads and quacks alike agree that our brains are programmed to recognise other human faces mainly via their eyes. Obviously those celebrities who wear sunglasses everywhere have researched this fact and acted accordingly. And you thought they were all smiles and no brain cells!
  2. So they do get recognised. There are certain species of celebrity that actually desire attention of passers-by on the street, and use their designer sunglasses to achieve this. Often they will resort to shock tactics of wearing rather silly bug-eyed specs that attract surprised and even concerned looks from passers by. Some celebrities have actually built their entire personal image around their specs. This latter syndrome is known as the Bono factor, named after the mens glasses icon and aging U2 frontman for his trademark luminous wrap-arounds.
  3. To protect themselves from flash photography. The number one predator of the simple celebrity is the vicious and merciless paparazzi - its natural for celebrities to think about defending themselves. These natural enemies are drawn in swarms to the bigger celebrities in particular. The paparazzi's primary offensive weapons are their huge flashes, predominantly used to startle their prey and cause gradual yet irreversible damage to their already ruined eye balls (see number 5 for more details on this). In fact over millions of years celebrities who wear sunglasses have been more suited to survival (much lower suicide rates) than those without, and they have therefore evolved to be more likely to shade their eyes.
  4. To hide their atrocious drunken make up / red eyes / wrinkles. You may not have thought it, but this is in actual fact a measure to protect us, the general public. Seriously, if we had to actually see the horrifying state of affairs behind celebrity sunglasses it would cause severe societal problems and our rose-tinted view of our hollywood-dwelling superiors would soome come crashing down around us. Yes, ladies’ glasses of the rich and famous are there for our sake. Just trust me on this one.
  5. Drugs make your eyes hurt. The intense responsibility and pressure that society places on the celebrity species leads them inevitibly to drug abuse. Chemicals like tetra-hydro-canabinol (found in marijuana) and the opiate compounds in heroin, create significant dilation of your pupils. The humble and seemingly harmless street light are in fact a painful health hazard for the celebrity eye. Have a heart and let them wear their shades.

I hope now I’ve made you think twice before tutting under your breath next time you see a hollywood star sporting ridiculously unneccesary shades in pitch black conditions.

Computer Workers And Glasses:Your Rights

Computers are ubiquitous, at home, at work and at school. Most of us seem to spend a large part of our days squinting at a monitor and with more of our shopping and entertainment being driven by the Internet, computer use is surely going to increase.  For many of us, that’s not a problem. If you spend more than two hours a day at a PC, then it’s likely that you will experience symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS).
CVS is caused by many things.Decreased blinking while you’re on the computer is also thought to be significant.   Studies have shown that the blink rate decreases to as low as 6–8 blinks per minute if you’re focused on a computer display (the normal blink rate is 16-20 per minute). This leads to dry eyes and the focusing for long hours also puts strain on the ciliary muscles in the eye. The most common symptoms of CVS include headaches, focusing difficulties, burning eyes, tired eyes, general eyestrain, aching eyes, dry eyes, double vision, blurred vision, light sensitivity with neck and shoulder pain.
CVS can also accelerate the early onset of a condition called presbyopia (usually associated with aging).
The good news is that easing these symptoms is straightforward. Daft as it may sound, blink more often!   If you are not a glasses wearer, simple changes like ensuring your computer screen is clean, correctly positioned, and set up properly will make a difference.
If you do wear glasses, then ensuring your lenses are clean and smear free will help to reduce glare and reflections. Anti-Reflective coatings (usually available at no charge if you ask for it through suppliers like SelectSpecs.com) will eliminate surface reflections for clear vision.   Anti-Reflective coatings also make the lenses of your glasses appear almost non-existent, so your eyes look more natural.
Whether you wear glasses of not, you can improve your vision at work by having regular eye examinations, taking  frequent breaks to give your eyes a rest every 20 minutes or so and avoiding  glare or bright reflections on the screen.   If you are using a CRT display, consider changing to an LCD screen.Get at least a 19 inch TFT screen with the highest resolution possible and a dot pitch of .28 mm or less. They lack the annoying and tiring “flicker” of CRT monitors, are easier on the eye and usually have an anti-reflective surface.

The even better news is that If you you use a computer or VDU screen on a regular basis (i.e. for at least an hour most days), then according to the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992, your employer is obliged  to pay for regular eye examinations. Your employer may have an agreement with a local optician or they may refund you the cost of an examination.  If that examination reveals that you require glasses specifically for Display Screen Equipment use, your employer must also pay for budget  glasses.
