As fun as playing guitar is, at times it can be frustrating if you aren’t getting the results you expect. What makes Jimi Hendrix’s sound easily recognizable from Carlos Santana? How can you easily tell metal from funk, even if let’s say the metal player and the funk player are playing the same song (very unlikely, but bear with me here)? The answer: guitarists use effects to color their sound and give it a kind of modification suited to the type of music involved.

Normally these effects can be housed separately in small effects pedals, or in multi-effects hardware, or built into amplifiers, or simulated in computer software. They can be used by themselves, or you can turn on combinations of effects to get a particular sound. Let’s try to identify the types of guitar effects available so you know which one is perfect for achieving the sound you want.

Distortion effects are popular in genres like rock, metal, etc. This is what produces the heavy, rough, raw sound you hear in these genres. Distortion effects can be divided into categories like overdrive/distortion (this is the well-known rough sound), fuzz (which is used to copy the sound of a vibrating torn speaker – thus being “fuzzy”), and high-gain (the thick, loud, “chugging” sound used in heavy metal). Almost all rock bands have these as a given, and is a good, basic investment.

Filtering effects are effects which shape the sound by enhancing or minimizing certain frequencies. Here you can find equalizers (similar to how normal equalizers work), and wahs (a foot-operated pedal that lets through increasingly higher or lower frequencies by rocking the pedal). The wah pedal is named because it sounds like a person saying a long “wah” when rocked (the low frequencies are the “w-“ and the high frequencies are the “-ah” part). You can hear this mostly in funky grooves.

Volume effects are just that, they modify the volume in different ways. Examples of these are volume pedals (these are just volume knobs in the shape of a pedal which you can rock back and forth), tremolos (which is used to copy the sound of a volume knob being turned up and down quickly, making the tone “fluctuate”), and compressors (used to preserve a certain volume level as the signal gets louder).

Time-based effects take a sound signal and copy it, making a kind of echoing sound. Delay pedals can change the delay time between the original sound and the copied sound, up to very long delay times, making a rolling echo-like sound (a notable user of delay effects is U2’s The Edge). Reverb pedals, however, duplicate the sound produced in a large space, where small echoes pile up and decay rapidly. Aside from distortion effects, these are also well known, and may be an essential part of your rig.

Modulation effects are effects which actually change how the sound sounds. Examples of these are phase shifters (which makes a sort of whooshing sound by copying the original signal and then putting it out of phase regularly), flangers (which create a kind of speeding-up or slowing-down sound), chorus pedals (copying the sound of several guitarists playing at the same time), and rotary speakers (copying the sound of a signal going through spinning speakers, making a kind of wavy pitch-changing effect). These types of effects are used to create those experimental, space-age-sounds.

Pitch shifters change the pitch of a signal, then combines it with the original sound so that it sounds like two guitars blending together in harmony. It can even be used as a bass guitar if you set it one octave lower than normal, or produce a video-gamey sound if set one octave higher.

You can experiment with combinations of pedals and connect them in chains to figure out what type of sound you want to create. After some time you can hear which effects were used in your favorite songs, and hopefully this article can assist you on the road to creating your own sound, and adding new layers to your musical adventure.

Strings are an important, yet often forgotten, part of the guitar. Even people who take excellent care of their guitars can forget to change their strings from time to time. Strings are the lifeblood of a guitar and, as such, should be cared for with as much as any other part of the instrument.

There are some signs that are obvious clues that you need to change out your strings. If your strings are discolored, change them. If your strings are not conforming to the right shape, change them, and if your strings are rusted, please, please change them. Hopefully, you are operating with all six strings because if one has disappeared, there’s a problem. On the smaller end of the less obvious scale, the truth is that you should change your strings every few months. Changing your strings will make the music that you play sound more clear, crisp and audibly recognizable to others.

Deciding when to change your strings can be the biggest challenge. Granted, the standard time is three months, but this time frame can vary tremendously. It’s the same thing when you change the oil in your car. If you drive your car thousands of miles a week, three months may be too long, but if you never drive your car at all, you could stretch out the time between oil changes. The same rule applies to guitar strings. Experience levels also come into play when changing your guitar. If you are someone who plays in a band, you may need to change your strings as often as every two weeks, but if you are someone who is just starting out, you can hold off in changing your strings for a later time.

There are many different kinds of strings, and many different manufacturers that will swear that their product is the best. The only way to decipher which brand is the best is to try out different ones and decide for yourself. However, knowing which type of strings, and not who makes them, is what should be your concern. If you have an acoustic guitar then you will need just regular acoustic guitar strings. If you own a classical guitar then your strings should be nylon. Generally, what type of guitar you are playing is what will categorize the strings. Therefore, there is really no excuse for buying the wrong strings. The thickness of the strings determines the quality of sound, but remember, the thicker the strings, the harder they are to play. The ballpark price for strings is around $8, anything more than that and you should question the store where you are making your purchase.

The actual process of changing the strings of your guitar can be intricate and frustrating until you are used to the process. You should try not to get discouraged because it will make your instrument keep a better sound. However, looking online may not be the best way to learn how to change the strings. Instead, you should try to look up a local music store and see if there is an associate that can change them with you watching.

Imagine how would ideally like to play.Try and imagine what your acoustic guitar playing would sound, look and feel like.What kind of acoustic guitar are you an expert at? How does your improvising sound? What is going on with your composing? You can write down your answers now.

Exercise 2:
Imagine your ideal guitar playing career. Would you be a master guitar teacher? What about an amazing performing artist? Or what about performing as part of a highly successful band? How about being an in demand studio guitarist? What do you really want to do? You can write down your answers now.

Exercise 3:
Jot down your ideas for a worthy career in guitar playing. Write your goal down in the present tense like you have already achieved it.Try to condense it down into a one paragraph statement.

Exercise 4:
Invest 5 minutes every morning and night to read your worthy ideal. This will be a factor in helping you stay motivated and focused on the goals that you want to achieve.

Clarity is something that you must have. Without it you won’t be able to start developing an effective plan to work towards your worthy ideal.

The origins of the guitar of today can be traced back a great many generations with many of the ancient instruments displaying characteristics similar to the modern instrument. Even though the guitar generally possesses six or twelve strings there are other versions which can have four, five, seven, eight and ten strings. For many decades this musical instrument has played the lead role in the progression of pop music and even after the invention of electronic keyboards, and computer based instruments, the guitar is the lead instrument in many styles of music such as rock and roll.

With so many ways of creating music on computers you will be surprised to learn that for a good few years now the popularity of the guitar has been markedly increasing with more and more people aquiring and trying to learn how to play the guitar. While many have dreams of being a rock god the larger number just wish to learn how to play well for the enjoyment of it.

Most folk learn to play the guitar by buying a guitar tuition book. There is a variety of books which include CDs that make the learning much easier. These publications more often than not show you a number or simple chords and power chords as well as bar chords and a few simple songs.

However, it is advisable to also be familiar with the more conventional ways of playing, as this will make you more of a versatile guitarist.

You need to ensure that you keep yourself motivated, and put in the practice. If you do it right, once you start to see progress this should be more than enough inspiration to continue, and work even harder.
