Scales, Why Do I Have to Learn Them?

Playing a musical instrument often entails uninteresting tasks such as playing scales that can become boring. No matter what instrument you play, the way to be a better player is to practice and scales are an important part of the practice session. If you can first understand how you will benefit from scales, then you will have more motivation to begin them in earnest.

Why Scales?

Scales are beneficial for the refinement of technique in your playing, being it guitar or piano. You will be able to progress to more demanding pieces if you persist in your scales practice. You will understand music theory more when you comprehend scales, they go hand in hand. Jazz players will attest to the importance of scales to playing jazz music. To be unfamiliar with scales is to not be able to read the road map of music, especially in jazz.

In order for scales to become second nature, it is important to incorporate scales into your daily practice routine. One of the benefits of scales is to warm up your fingers before you begin playing.

Practice Tips

Pick a scale that is comfortable for you to play. Start slowly and do not strain. Before moving to a full octave run, it may be advisable to use only a triad at first. Move your starting point up a half step at a time until you have moved up an octave. Next you can try a different scale and repeat the process.

The patterns you learn as you play scales will become part of your permanent muscle memory. To improve your technique, run the scales together one after another as you move up and down. It is important to not treat your scale practice lightly. Scales are often looked at as a chore that is to be dreaded and avoided at all costs.
You are developing good or bad habits as you play scales, so concentrate and play well.

Relaxing With Music

We live in a very stressful and busy world. Between our jobs, and our family, we barely have any time left for ourselves. Not only is this bad for the mind, but it is bad for the body as well. Relaxation time is very important, and a mere 30 minutes a day can do wonders for your psychic and body.

One such relaxing activity, for both the mind and body, is listening to music. Listening to music is not influenced by gender, age or nationality, and people all over the world are enjoying this fun, relaxing activity, whenever their time allows it.

Nothing compares to listening to music in the comfort of your own home, but not all people have the time for this. Mobile Mp3 players come to the aid of such people, allowing them to listen to music wherever they are.

Mp3 players now allow people to do much more than just listen to music. Advanced players, called portable media players, even allow users to watch photos, or their favorite videos.

One such player is the Creative Zen 4GB, which even includes a FM radio, if your music collection is not that big. The player is one of the most advanced portable media players, and having it with you at all times allows you to listen to music, or view a video clip, whenever you want.

Listening to music in public is considered weird by some, and wearing headphones makes them feel uncomfortable. However, listening to music in public has become quite common, and people wearing headphones can be seen in all places, be it the local park, or library. Headphone design has also evolved, and their size has gotten significantly smaller, so people will rarely know you’re wearing them. Using a Mp3 player such as this one, for even a couple of days, will only show you what you’ve been missing out on!

Nokia - Free Download

In opening this article, have you been asking yourself how you can obtain limitless music downloads? As regards music download, Wal-Mart music download website is one of the least complicated services on hand; each song on the Wal-Mart music downloads website has an identical low price of as little as .88 cents.

A number of artists authorize the downloading of their songs from their websites, usually as a short foretaste or a low quality example; other artists have implanted services in their websites that agree for sales of their singles or albums, as confirmed by Metallica’s official site.

Legal music download sites or pay-per-song music series allow you to pay for the songs you wish to have; it’s no more necessary to buy whole CD’s just for a particular hit song, or perhaps two well-known hit songs. According to a survey, 75% of youths in Sweden (18-20), like the idea of files sharing, even though it’s against the law.

If you have an iPod, there are a lot of sites committed to completely free iPod music download, and majority of them are earning money off the pay-per-click publicity. Read more about the iPhone (and how they don’t mix with fizzy drinks!) at the Phone Directory Blog.

An unadulterated peer-to-peer group does not have the concept of customers or servers, but merely equal peer nodes that concurrently work as both “customers” and “servers” to the other nodes on the group.

With Rhapsody you acquire unrestricted admittance to more than one million musical tracts accompanied by music jukebox software to handle your whole compilation, and more than 80 ad-free radio stations; they in addition, let you to build and exchange your playlists (a typical characteristic among a good number of internet music services.)

Note that you certainly do not have to shell out money to make use of P2P file sharing programs online; there now exists P2P rip-off websites that are rogue companies which have set up their shops to rip off unwary music downloaders in search of file sharing programs by asking payment for an otherwise free of charge service.

To round up this article, remember that if you must download music from a file sharing website, ask others which they have used and recommend; since many people have now taken to downloading music online you are sure to find one among your friends, relatives or fellow workers that has downloaded music online.

Important Ipod Additions

We all want a small ipod to take along everywhere we go, and we would like it to suit any function we might think of at a certain moment. This incredible small player has revolutionized the market, and since it appeared, hundreds of companies tried to duplicate the technology it incorporated by adding new features to existing players, or attempting to produce even small players. None of them registered the tremendous success ipod had and still has.

A great small and colorful player is the best choice for any teen that simply needs to stand out. This is why parents are buying thousands of new ipods daily for their kids, as they make a perfect gift for any age, and can also prove very useful. But an ipod without proper accessories is like a beautiful girl dressed in old clothes. This is why you must think ahead and determine what possible uses you might be considering for your small player.

You could be going on a trip and take you ipod along. It’s a shame not to have the appropriate set of ipod mini headphones with you, as they will be the only way you can listen to your favorite music while you’re traveling. Also, the small accessories are easy to loose, since they are indeed smaller than the usual sets, therefore you’ll need a special ipod bag to carry along, with proper pockets for all accessories, so that they can stay in there sealed and protected.

This player is surrounded by mystery and because it looks so out of our era, people who wear it are always regarded with admiration. Kids look at you as you are some kind of future traveler and women crave for one just like yours. Maybe it’s just a fashion thing, or maybe the Apple Company knew what they did when they developed this player, but the certain reaction you’ll be getting is a total admiration.

The main conclusion here is that the simple fact that you’ve just bought an ipod doesn’t do the trick. If you want it to be completed, you must equip it with the best accessories on the market, and be careful not to forget about extra batteries.

8 Tips for Learning the Art of Sight-Reading Written Music

The ability to sight-read piano music is a common skill.  This is when you play a piece of music for the first time, even though it may be unfamiliar to you.  Though it is not common to play a song perfectly the first time through, here are 8 tips to make sight-reading music easier for you.

Tip # 1. Key Signature.  The key signature of the piece of music that you are about to play requires special attention.  Having the correct sharps and flats committed to memory makes your play much smoother and accurate.

Tip # 2. Time Signature.  This is another basic characteristic of every piece of music that you must understand in order to sight-read.  You will need to know what kind of note gets one beat. One question to always ask is “how many beats in a measure”.

Tip # 3. Key or Time Signatures Changes.  You need to examine your piece of music to see if the key or time signatures change.  This will help prepare you for a transition that can happen in the middle of a song when you otherwise did not know about it.

Tip # 4. Starting and Ending Notes.  Starting and Ending notes are excellent reference points for your piano play. Make sure you are familiar with them.

Tip # 5. Note the Rhythm.  Check your left hand chords to see what rhythm is used throughout the piece.  As you look through the song, you usually can get an idea of how it will go.  This will ease you through when trying to play the correct rhythm during sight-reading.

Tip # 6.  Play the Melody First.  Also look through the right hand melody line. Play this through first.  This will help give you an idea of the sound of the song and then you can put it all together and you will be able to identify the unique melodic line.

Tip # 7.  Check for Other Markings.  Look through the entire piece and check for any other markings covered in Music Terminology.  Some examples include the loudness or softness of the piece, the speed of the music, and how long you should actually hold each note that is played.

Tip # 8. Relax and Focus. This last tip is so important. Take a deep breath and relax yourself.  Focus on the music and the beauty therein.  Try to play the song all the way through for your first sight-reading.  This gives you a general idea of what the song will sound like.  Later you can break it down and work on each measure or group of measures as you see fit. Remember. We are playing music for the love of it, not as a chore.

Maybe you are asking yourself why you should learn to sight-read music.  Why not just learn the song a little bit at a time?  Sight-reading forces you to move forward at a faster pace until you finish the song, ultimately helping you learn to play music faster.  This helps you get rid of the bad habits that lead to starts and stops when first playing a new piece of music.  Sight-reading is an important skill to learn if you wish to become a good piano player.

The Use of Music & Brands In the Music Industry

We believe we live in a relatively rational world. However in reality we experience lives through our emotions first which we then post-rationalise to help us make sense of it, giving us the perception that we are in control; that we are deciding on what we see, hear, think and feel.

Music has the ability to bypass our rational defences. Have you ever been really frustrated because you have a song you don’t like in your head and you can’t get it out, but for some reason you just can’t stop singing it? Another example would be think about how different music makes you feel; it’s not that music ‘can’ effect our mood – it ‘does’ effect our mood. Again this is because it connects with us at an emotional level. This together with the physical nature of music – in that it can quite literally connect with the heartbeat of the listener – makes music a quite different channel of communication. The experience of music is an individual one.

It is therefore no surprise to hear that:

“Music is the fastest medium for people to form an association (with)”
David Aakers – Building Strong Brands

How does this information help those who are starting an indie music label, or running an independent music label?

Well, these insights are very important to anyone working with brands and music in the music industry because it highlights the potential potency and power of music to communicate at an ‘unstoppable’ emotional level with your prospective audiences. Music is made all the more powerful because it speaks in one voice to each and every one of us and needs no translation.

It is a fact that increasingly our purchasing decisions are based on emotional attributes rather than rational ones and given that the strongest brands have strong emotional bonds with their audiences, it follows that music should be a key ingredient in helping to create and form that bond…and influence those decisions.

From an artists/band’s viewpoint, this means that your music can develop and grow as a brand. It then follows that you can manage your music as a brand – extrapolating relevant brand theory and practice as and when appropriate to help you add value and sustain yourself over time.

Whilst you might think that the above is common practice in the music business I have come across very few artists, music managers, bands or labels (independent labels or otherwise) who adopt this approach. The music business and industry generally does tend to be more executional than strategic.

Understanding brand theory and practice – such as positioning, target audience, brand values and personality, communication – will help you take a more strategic approach to your music business overall but more importantly it will help you create long term value over time.

Tips for Downloading Music from the Internet

One of the best things about the Internet is that you can now download music. often times for free, and add it to your MP3 player in just seconds! There are some good free sites, but be careful when downloading from a free site, the quality is not always great. And sometimes those “free” sites include spyware or malware with your download. For free downloads, BeeMP3 is a good site.com for free downloads. And great quality, too.

You might feel more comfortable paying for music downloads if you want quality and peace of mind. Amazon has a terrific selection and the price is not too bad, $0.79 to $0.99 per song.

(This article is only about MP3 players, downloads, and Windows-based products and information, sorry to all the Apple fans out there.)!)

There are other free sites out there that I have used to download music, but they are not quite legitimate, and one of the sites I like is always getting into legal trouble with their government for copyright issues  (the site is based somewhere in Europe).I don’t want to recommend or link to any other sites that are questionable.

And my recommendation for the best MP3 player on the market today is the Zune from Microsoft. There are plenty of MP3 products on the marketplace today, and there are products that are cheaper than the Zune, but they just do not have the capacity nor the ease of use that the Zune offers. Especially for people who want to amass a huge music library – not just on your computer, but on your portable player as well. My 80 GB Zune is maxed out, and I’ve had to remove some files to add more songs. Maybe next Christmas I’ll get the 120 from Santa.

And if you are a bit confused with all the technical jargon, I’ve written an e-book about how to create a digital music library on your computer and on your MP3 player. My e-book offers a truly easy way to collect a state-of-the-art digital music library that is inexpensive, portable, and takes up very little space.

Enjoy your new music collection!

A Review of No Line on the Horizon, U2′s Newst Album

On March 3, 2009, U2 released their 12th studio album, No Line on the Horizon.

It’s been a while since their last release, 2004′s How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, but it was worth the wait. The album features 11 songs with the best of classic U2 music.

The Irish rockers get back to basics with their strongest offering in years. It was recorded in Dublin, New York, London and Fès, Morocco.  And the good news is that Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, and Steve Lillywhite all helped to produce the album.  But I don’t think this is the best U2 album since Eno and Lanois first worked with the band on 1984′s The Unforgettable Fire.

Magnificent, with its drum crescendos, trademark guitar riffs, and a soaring Bono vocal, is easily the best song on the album and is the second single to be released.  The first song released, Get On Your Boots, is actually a good track; this is the song the band performed at the Grammys on February 8.Get on Your Boots is a fun, foot-tapping track.  However, Boots only hit No. 37 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Breathe suggests that the band’s classic approach can still sound contemporary. A song about war and violence, Cedars Of Lebanon ends the album on a sad, thoughtful note. The band still has a sense of humour with lyrics such as “the right to appear ridiculous is something I hold dear” in the song, I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight.

However, sales have not been as robust as the band had hoped for since its release on March 3.The album only sold 484,000 copies in its first week of sales. Not too many bands would consider 484,000 albums sold a disappointing number. But U2 is not just any act. The Irish band’s last album, 2004′s How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, sold 840,000 copies in the first week.

But in my opinion, apart from a couple of the tracks being a bit too long and the cover art being a bit boring, the album – over 54 minutes – is a worthy addition to U2′s collection.

Cable and Satellite TV Advice – What You Need to Know about Cable and Satellite TV

For more advice about satellite tv for pc software and an updated version of cable TV versus satellite go to buy satellite tv for pc.

People make cable and satellite TV choices based on comparisons between various digital television packages offered by one service provider or another. A comparison of cable and satellite TV offers always starts from the premium services and the special room system configurations that first subscribers take advantage of. But for cable networks, television would have looked different these days: at the beginning all those who couldn’t enjoy good signal from local affiliates subscribed to the cable network and thus contribute to its becoming part of the television landscape. Presently, cable systems have turned into highly complex structures, as they are now organized in business conglomerates and associations with satellite companies too.

Cable and satellite TV prices vary according to the taxes the companies pay and the investments they have to make to modernize the networks. Thus, satellite options are more advantageous in terms of price because their taxes are not set by local governments and usually include less complex infrastructures. Cable networks on the other hand have millions of miles of underground cables that need to be converted to digital technologies, which will surely prove expensive. Therefore, the costs for cable services are higher than those for satellite; yet the complexity of the TV packages have a certain influence in the matter too.

The number and type of channels remain similar with both cable and satellite TV companies, but there are good bits and bad bits about each of the variants. Satellite solutions for instance allow the viewer the choice of programs through extensive feeds and alternate packages: this means that an average user could dispose of about five hundred programs at will. On the other hand, cable networks are a lot more advantageous for one who isn’t interested such diversity, but would rather pay for good network reception only. Local programming is thus the solution offered by cable companies as a counter offer to satellite.

Different equipment is necessary for cable and satellite TV modes; when you go for cable, the TV set is all the gear necessary, while with satellite more items are necessary for digital programming. Converters, compatible television and a dish remote control are necessary under the circumstances, with the mention that satellite requires a permanent and unobstructed open view to the southern sky for signal reception. If the climate specific to your area is not that friendly, you could get very little control over the reception and operation of the dish.

Satellite TV Advice – Information about Watching Satellite TV

For an updated version of watch satellite TV and more information about satellite tv for pc software visit buy satellite tv for pc.

The possibility to watch satellite TV online has increased in popularity over the years, starting from YouTube video individual broadcasting system. The very next step was to watch satellite TV on the Internet on a constant basis and at the detriment of satellite TV companies. If regular service providers can offer up to five hundred programs, online you get to enjoy over 2,000. Do we need that many programs to watch? Well, satellite broadcasting means diversity and access to a very multiple range of channels from music and news to sports and kids shows. For the faithful watchers of traditional TV networks, all they have to do is stick to a programing package and pay for it accordingly.

One incredible advantage of being able to watch satellite TV online is the possibility to stay in contact with a place dear to your heart. Many immigrants enjoy the broadcast of television networks from their countries of origin. Moreover, one may want to watch programs run by networks on the other coast, consequently, there is nothing impossible with the new digital technologies of satellite systems. There are of course downsides to the use of a dish because of system incompatibility and bad weather exposure.

The explanation for the loss of signal that occurs during heavy rain or storms is that water sticks to the surface of the dish and doesn’t allow the proper reception of the signal. Weather in fact blocks the capacity of the dish to amplify the signal sent by the satellite. All sorts of improvised solutions have been found to assist users with this issue. Yet, before starting any improvisation, turn to the service provider and see whether they can provide any remedy for the inconvenience. If you live in a geographical areas with lots of storms and heavy winds, the installation of a satellite antenna may not be that great after all.

With the modern upgrades performed on dishes, you can watch satellite TV undisturbed even when traveling. And with such a variety of programs it seems that the world is a lot smaller place to be in. In case you don’t have the time to watch your favorite show or movie, technology allows for the recording and storing of lots of such programs and their organizing in virtual libraries to be accessed and enjoyed afterwards. The device is called a digital video recorder or a DVR and it sometimes comes in first buyer promotions launched by satellite service providers to attract customers.
