Encouraging your children to be arty and creative

The simple acts of drawing and coloring are literally childs’ play, however, they both play an important role in your child’s physical, emotional and cognitive development. Like no other activity, the hobby of drawing and coloring allows young children to express emotions, experience autonomy and build their confidence.

Parents and caregivers such as teachers and grandparents can promote the hobby of drawing and coloring as a way to improve physical, social, emotional and cognitive development-and to have a lot of fun along the way too. Here are some suggestions:

1. Provide your grankids with nontoxic materials, blank sheets of white paper and coloring pages.

2. Model drawing. Show children that you enjoy drawing and coloring too – make designs but do not show your children what they should draw.

3. Encourage all drawing and coloring efforts by talking about the beautiful colors, the lines and shapes the child has made.

4. Rather than ask, “What have you drawn?,” say “Tell me about your drawing”.Asking “What is that?” suggests to the child that s/he has failed to depict what they intended.

5. Talk about issues such as thin or thick, or the concept of wide, narrow, dark, light, edge, shape, contour, etc.

6. Display their art on the kitchen fridge, in their room and in places where visitors to your home will see them. Point them out to visitors, friends and relatives – the praise fthey will receive for the work will boost a child’s self esteeem and confidence.

7.Give kids the freedom to choose the subjects of their drawings and the types of coloring sheets they would like. Some argue that coloring sheets do very little to foster children’s creativity – however they do play a vital role in developing a child’s fine motor skills – a pre-cursor to writing – and often encourage children who wouldn’t otherwise draw and color to pick up a crayon to color in their favourite character. For example at sites like Disney Coloring Pages you’ll find the best Disney colouring pages.

Always supervise younger children while they draw and color – crayons pose a choking hazard.

Winter craft recipes to bust the boredom

School Christmas holidays will soon be here and little kids the world over may soon be chanting, “Mummy! I’m bored!”

So, here are a dozen or so play-time ‘recipes’ to help keep your children entertained this winter.  Learn how to make homespun goop, papier mâché, cinnamon ornaments, soap crayons and much more. Pull out this article and stick it to your fridge – it will be one of your best weapons against the ‘boredom’ gremlins!

Washable window paints
A selection of tempera paints (powdered or premixed)
Clear dishwashing liquid
Mix powdered paints with dishwashing liquid until they resemble house paint. Ensure that you line the window sashes with masking tape & spread newspaper under the window area to protect flooring. To erase paint or touch up mistakes just wipe paint away with a dry paper towel.

Home-made coloring books

Go online and download a dozen or so coloring book pages and collate them into a coloring book. Put this aside for rainy days or for long car/train/plane journeys. Little boys love images of cars and trucks while little girls prefer coloring book pictures of fairytales and princesses. At sites like Hello Kitty Coloring Pages you’ll find the best .

Cinnamon Christmas ornaments
3/4-1 cup applesauce
1 (4.12-oz.) bottle of ground cinnamon
Mix applesauce with cinnamon to form a stiff dough. Roll out to 5mm thickness. Cut with cookie cutter and make hole for ribbon using the end of a drinking straw. Carefully put aside to dry for several days – turning occasionally. This recipe makes twelve sweet-smelling ornaments/drawer scenters.

Goop

2 packets of cornflour
2 cups of water
Several drops of food colouring

Place newspaper or plastic sheets on your work surface. Mix the ingredients in a fairly large bowl. Children love goop’s squishy consistency. You can also use colored or plain black paper to make goop paintings if you wish. To remove goop from carpets, allow it to dry, then brush or vacuum. The brilliant thing about goop is that it may be re-used after it has dried out. Crumble it to a powder then restore it to the original consistency by adding water a tablespoonful at a time.

Funny putty
2 tablespoons of white glue
1 tablespoon of liquid starch
Food colouring
Mix glue together with the desired food colour. Pour starch over top. Swish so that all the glue is covered. Let set for 5 minutes. Squeeze off extra starch and then knead until mixed.

Bubbles
1 cup water
1/2 teaspoon of sugar
1 teaspoon of glycerine
2 tablespoons of liquid dish soap
Mix water, glycerine and soap. Pour in sugar. Add food colouring if desired.

Papier mâché

1 cup flour
1 cup warm water
1/2 inch strips of newspaper
Balloon/s

In a large bowl, mix flour and water – add more flour is mixture is too sloppy (dripping). Place newspaper strips into mixture until well soaked, then smooth onto blown up balloon. Cover balloon completely twice, letting dry in between layers. Do not cover the balloon’s knot. Dry in a warm place for around two or three days then hold the knot and pop the balloon with a pin. Paint, glitter and decorate the balloon as is or cut in half so you have a bowl/hat shape to embellish.

Modelling/play dough
2 cups flour
1 cup salt
water
food colouring

Mix the ingredients and knead to a dough consistency. To speed up the drying, place the dough artwork in the oven on a low heat.

Soap crayons

1 3/4 cups of soap flakes

50 drops food colouring
1/4 cup water

Mix water and soap flakes together. Add food colouring and put mixture into an ice cube tray. When hardened, pop the ‘ice cubes’ out. These soap crayons are fun to write with on the tub and tiles during bath time. If grouting stains, simply spray with a weak solution of bleach.

Sand dye

Fine sand

Water

Food colouring

Paper cups

Plastic spoons

Fill paper cups half full with sand. Next, add water to the cups to completely cover sand. Add food colouring until you get the desired colour. Stir with a plastic spoon and let set for 15 minutes. Pour off the water, spoon sand onto paper towels and then spread the sand out to dry. Use sand to make pictures (spread glue on paper and sprinkle sand on top) or to fill pretty bottles in layers.

Cornstarch Art/Finger-paint

3 tablespoons of cornstarch

1/4 cup cold water

2 drops of dishwashing liquid

1 cup boiling water

Food colouring

Combine cornstarch and cold water – stir until smooth. Add dishwashing liquid. Pour boiling water into the bowl and stir until the mixture thickens. Add food colouring and let cool. Use as you would finger paint.

Puffy Paint

Flour

Salt

Water

Tempera paint

Mix equal parts of flour, salt and water in a bowl. Add a tiny amount of tempera paint to the mixture and pour into a small plastic squeezy bottle. Repeat this over and over to make as many colours as you wish. Squeeze liberally onto heavy paper or even cardboard to make designs. Mixture will look great when it hardens into puffy shapes.

Colourful Salt

1/2 cup salt

5 to 6 drops of food colouring

Add food colouring to salt. Stir well. Cook this in a microwave oven for 1-2 minutes or spread on waxed paper and let salt air dry. Store this in an airtight container and use as you would glitter.

The Perfect “I Love My Children” Jewelry: Mothers Rings

There is something magical about becoming a mother. There is a scariness too, of course. No one can ever predict what will happen once you have a child. But no matter what, there is great cause for celebration. There is no end to the rewards of raising a beautiful baby girl or boy. The love a mother feels for her children runs deeper than any other connection. The act of carrying the baby and giving them life is a truly moving act. So of course there is much to look forward to when expecting. Not to mention, there is a family around the mother who are truly excited for the upcoming birth. That is when parties with gifts come into play. There are tips and wives tales and guide books to share. When a mother is expecting, there are limitless gifts to give. But what about after the mother has given birth? There are the traditional loving cards, flowers, and kinds words. Everywhere you look there can be shared joy. But if you are looking for a gift for a new mother, or want to celebrate your own new motherhood, there are many ways to celebrate. One way to show a mother’s love for her child is through mothers rings. Jewelry, which can last forever, is always a wise choice.

Such rings have many ways to become personalized. You can decorate the ring with the birthstone of your child. Of course, if you are looking for a ring as a gift, there is a special creativity on your part to make the gift personal and surprise the loving mother. The best thing about jewelry is that it is so easy to personalize and modify. But not to worry, moms of two or more, because rings for mothers are only meant for one child. Stackable rings allow a mother to add on a ring or stone for each baby they have.

Jewelry is always a great gift for mothers, and the more personalized the jewelry is, the more meaningful it is. Everyone knows a ring can last a lifetime, so you know it is a precious gift. Jewelry gifts can hold so much love and endearment, more than can be put a price on.

Eight crafts to keep ‘em busy!

When the kids get home from school in the afternoon and say ‘I’m bored’, at least you can point them towards doing their homework – however – when it’s the week-end or school holidays – you know that it won’t be long until you hear ‘I’m bored’ several times a day!

Times are tough economically but entertaining kids has never been an expensive enterprise -  so here are eight ideas to keep your children busy, creative and active during these long summer months.

Milk Jug Bird Feeders – Rinse out the empty plastic gallon milk jug with lid. Cut a window in the front of the jug, and make two small poke holes for the perches. Insert sticks for perches and fill the bottom of the jug with bird seed. Depending on the ages of the child, let them problem solve and figure out the best way to secure the perch and if they wish they can decorate the birdfeeder before hanging it on the balcony or in the garden.

Aluminum Can Crafts – Paint an empty, rinsed out tuna can with acrylic paint or spray paint.Decorate with glitter, glue, buttons, stickers and any other odds and ends you might find.Once completed these make cute little holders for hair accessories, paper clips, rubber bands, keys, jewelry etc. Apply the same idea to an empty soup can to make a pen or pencil holder. These are great to give to fathers to take into the office.

Coloring in – Coloring in was the staple activity of many summer holidays when I was la litle girl. If you have access to the internet, have some paper and a printer, it means you don’t even have to pay for a coloring book. When it comes to coloring pictures, you really can’t go wrong with Disney and at sites like Disney Coloring Pages you’ll find the best Disney coloring page

Coffee Can Stilts – Using two 1-pound coffee cans, turn each can upside down so that the plastic lid is on the bottom. Using a scredriver, an adult should poke two holes – one each side of the can. Using some rope, thread through holes in the cans. Tie off inside the can and practice walking on them. Kids cand ecorate the cans if they so wish.

Jar Candles – Keep aside the stubs of candles. When you have several saved, melt them together in a double boiler. Color the wax by adding bits of wax crayon to the mixture. Pour the wax into glass jelly or mason jars or metal cans. Use cotton string for wicks and decorate the outside of the candle holder with acrylic paints. After dusk – light your candle…but always surpervise your children around flames!

Paper Towel Rain Makers – Young kids love noise makers such as maracas. Color, paint and decorate paper towel rolls. Cover one end of a paper towel roll with waxed paper and close it off with a rubber band or three. Pour a handful or three of dried beans or split peas in the open end and close the open end the same way as the other. Poke toothpicks through the rolls at different intervals to add a ‘rain shaker’ sound – like the ones the aboriginal people of Australia create.

Paper Towel Tube Holders – Decorate a paper towel tube with paint, markers,  stickers and crayons. Once decorated this is  a colorful carrying tube. Roll up drawings and pictures and put them  inside the tube  to take them to  their teacher, grandparents, friends or relatives.

Pet Rocks – Pet rocks have stood the test of time and any rock can be turned into a pet rock with a lick of paint and some googly eyes. First, find smooth, flat or round rocks. Be sure to clean off any mud or sand and dry completely before starting. Painting with acrylic paints. Decorate faces by adding yarn for hair, googly eyes, glitter and any other bits and pieces you like. I always add freckles on my Pet Rocks!

Enjoy yourself these summer holidays!

Baby Talk To Talking Baby

Baby talk, also called babbling or twaddling, is what infants utter. They seem to be experimenting by uttering sounds in order to acquire language. They are not yet able to utter recognizable words. The larynx descends during the first year allowing the pharynx to develop with all the sounds that make up the speech. When the infant is 5 to 7 months old, the baby talk begins with the making of noise. Recognizable words begin to be produced when the child is about a year old. The baby repeats syllables which are called reduplicative babbling. The baby babbles with a mix of syllables which is called variegated babbling. Children babble more when they are calm rather than when they are upset or excited. Babbling is also the way babies attempt to prepare themselves with the basic sounds required to speak the language. Even deaf babies babble indicating that babbling is inherent to humans.

From birth to about 4 months the babies coos and gurgles. When the baby is 4 to 6 months old, it starts babbling. This babbling continues to when the baby is a year or so old. Meaningful sound and words starts emerging between the age of 12 and18 months. Between 18 and 24 months the toddlers starts repeating words. Meaningful words begin to form then with the babbling. About 50 words or so is the vocabulary of the baby. But they are able to understand many more words than they are able to utter. Short sentence begin to form. But then they may not be able to use the words correctly. The progression of the baby is from crying to cooing and then progressing to vocal play. Canonical babbling follows which later becomes conversational babbling.

An effective means of communication that the babies use is the sign language. Babies often do not find the appropriate sound which gives them frustration. This can be avoided if they are also taught the sign language so that they can express themselves. Priscilla Dunstan proposed that universally there were only five words that babies use and each of them have a distinct meaning. She then released The Dunston Baby Language DVD in 2006 which teaches how these sounds can be recognized.

It will help the babies to develop if the babbling of the babies is responded by adults with babbling. Adding some simple adult speech to this will help the baby in developing vocabulary. The baby’s cognitive development too benefits. In the end anyway the baby will be able to speak the local language.

Close And Cozy, The Baby Is Take Care Of

Baby slings have been in vogue for ages all over the world. This is a piece of cloth that is used to tie the baby to the body of the one who takes care of the baby. The ring sling is a modification with a cloth sewn to two rings, usually made of aluminum. The head and the arm of the wearer are put through the loop of the cloth. A pocket is formed between the rings where the child is seated. Ring slings can be used to carry an infants as well as toddlers. The pouch slings are similar but without the rings. It is simply a cloth forming a pouch which is sewn into shape. The size of the pouch is adjusted with the use of clips, rings, snaps, buckles, and zippers. The seat for the child is created when the pouch is slipped over the head and shoulder.

Wrap, wraparound slings or wraparound are long fabric that wraps the baby with the wearer securely when tied. The baby or the toddler is comfortably seated on the back, front or the hip according to the convenience of the wearer. Wraps are of two kinds. There is the stretchy and the woven. Jersey or interlock knits are used in the stretchy wrap. The baby can be easily carried in this making it more popular. The woven wrap makes use of woven natural fabric. A number of materials can be used such as wool, linen, silk and hemp though cotton is the most used. They are also attractive in their patterns and colors. A simpler form of wrap is the cloth used to tie the baby to the wearer with the cloth knotted at one end together making a slinging wrap. Almost all cultures have some form of wraps. The Chinese use a cloth almost square shaped with parallel unpadded straps from the corners and they call them mei tai. The Korean podaegi is almost the same except that the fabric is larger and rectangular in shape with a longer strap. Other variations are the parka or amauti of the Inuits, the Japanese onbuhimo, the Chinese bei beis and Hmong carriers.

Stroller is yet another popular baby carrier and is in the form of seat on wheels. There are many models and designs in which they come. There are the Chicco Trevi Strollers, Inglesina Strollers, Graco Strollers, Maclaren Strollers, Kolcraft Strollers, Schwinn Strollers, Rock Star baby strollers and Stokke Strollers. If you want to get further details, for instance, of Chicco Trevi Stroller then you should check the Chicco Trevi Stroller reviews .

Whether the simple baby slings or the strollers, these are part of baby care. They enable the carer to carry or take the baby, keep an eye on the baby and take care at work or travel.

Safe And Sound, The Kids In The Stroller

Strollers are baby carriages resembling seat on wheels. Strollers are used to transport babies up to the age of three. It is easier to carry the babies in the strollers when moving around or traveling. Carrying the child in your arms can inconvenience you causing discomfort to the baby. It is safe to use strollers as they seat the baby securely and safely. The stroller needs only a small space for making turns. Strollers that can accommodate two and three children are also there in the market. The children are placed side by side or inline one behind the other.

There are different kinds of strollers such as the umbrella strollers, standard strollers, travel system strollers and jogging strollers. The umbrella strollers are light, compact and easy to push around. It does not have a sun canopy and is meant for both babies and older kids. The standard strollers have a sun canopy and compartments for storage. It is heavier as well as costlier. Its reclining set makes it ideal for infants as well as toddlers. The travel system stroller is a standard stroller with a car seat. This car seat is useful to remove the baby from and to the stroller without disturbing the baby. A recent addition to the stroller variety is the jogging stroller which has three large wheels and is stable in rough terrain as well as when the stroller is moved fast. Jogging stroller is a new addition to the stroller. It has the features of a standard stroller but has three large wheels instead of four wheels. Its design is more compact. It takes rough ground more easily making it easily maneuverable. It is stable even when pushed little faster.

Strollers that are available include such brands as Graco Strollers, Rock Star baby stroller, Chicco Strollers, Schwinn Strollers, Kolcraft Strollers, Inglesina Strollers, Maclaren Strollers and Stokke Strollers. The price of the strollers varies with the materials used and the features.

The stroller should ideally have all its wheels firm on the ground and it does not wobble or for that matter tip. The stroller should not have any sharp edges lest they injure the baby. The screws should be plastic covered so that the baby will not be able to loosen them.

Why we should encourage our children to take part in arts and crafts

The merits of arts and crafts such as drawing and coloring  for kids are regularly argued by child development experts, educators and parents alike… especially so for the real impact they have on child development. However, it is difficult to argue with the top three reasons why we should all encourage the children in our care to  take part in arts and crafts.

Creativity – Ask anyone what the first personality characteristic arts and crafts develop in a young child and most will answer ‘creativity’. And they are certainly correct.  Everyone has natural talents and skills and it is possible to improve and boost them… even if you only have a little natural talent. Creativity enables your child to try out and profit from new
ideas, options and alternatives in any future career. Kids learn to do things in new ways and literally profiting from thinking “out of the box”.

Perseverance – Perseverance is perhaps the single most important quality for any successful individual – be they a a business person, sportsman or other professional.  In fact, most well-known breakthroughs in life have been attributed to perseverance alone. Arts and crafts improve everyone’s level of perseverance.  For instance, children learn to keep trying until they complete the task, be it a sculpture or a coloring in sheet. If something unexpected goes wrong… they are encouraged to persist by trying new ways and means and the pay-off is a wonderful piece of art that they have created.

Concentration – Similar to having perseverance, developing concentration is another quality well-worth having as an individual. Drawing, coloring, sculpting, painting and even doodling will definitely teach your child to focus on one  specific task at hand… ignoring other distractions. In short they overall concentration will definitely improve.

Even from a young age children can draw and color – so give them blank pieces of paper or coloring in sheets so that they can scribble away  to their hearts content whilst also improving their fine motor skills.

For example little girls  enjoy coloring images of princesses and fairies and at sites like Fairy Coloring Pages you’ll find the best fairy coloring book

Little boys on the other hand prefer pictures of cars, trucks and machinery – however, favorite characters such as those from Disney movies are also hits with little boys.

Give your child several opportunities to experience being creative, concentrating and perservering through the fun medium of arts and crafts. Provide them with materials and resources and the occasional canvas so that they can  be creative and feel pride in what they create.

Encouraging art and creativity in children

Encourage creativity in your children by providing them with the time, resurces and the space for making art.Set aside interruption-free time for drawing, in a mess-proof zone – so that their creativity can run wild. Make sure you cover all surfaces so that any splashes of paint or scribbles of crayon are ‘caught’ – because  nothing squishes creativity more so than a parent saying “Don’t make a mess” every 2 minutes.

Choosing the right drawing materials is also very important. Many craft materials can be improvised (think of kitchen roll tubes, yogurt pots etc) but when drawing tools and paper are required, opt for a small selection of good quality age-appropriate products, rather than loads of inferior products. Always make sure that you check safety information and follow instructions. Young children should always be surpervised during ‘art time’ because many necessary materials – such as crayons – pose a choking hazard.

Surroundings:As with writing or working at a computer, good posture and a comfortable position are important for drawing. A child sized table and chair is actually preferable to an easel. If the chair is a little high, provide a phone book as a footrest. A coffee table and an inexpensive plastic chair work well. A small kitchen storage trolley is perfect for containing supplies, or if space does not allow, a portable fishing tackle box is a great option too. Messy toddlers may need a drop-cloth and supervision to avoid ink-stained walls, as even ‘washable’ pens often don’t deliver on that promise!

Art Materials:Avoid cheap markers, too-hard pencils and thin paints – these types of materials are discouraging to the child and therefore  a waste of money. Provide many sheets of plain blank paper to inspire their creativity and occasionally invest in a canvas so that your child can paint something and chances are you’ll want to hang it on your wall!  Provide also coloring books or coloring pages which are bountiful online – coloring pages are not so great for creativity, however they do provide children with the  chance to practice their fine motor skills and sometimes it’s very relaxing and just what they need. They can simply color in without feeling the ‘pressure’ about WHAT to draw.  Little boys typically enjoy coloring pictures of cars and trucks while little girls usually enjoy colouring images of princesses and fairies - sites like like Fairy Coloring Pages you’ll find many fairies print and color
