Party planning for little ghouls

Planning your kids’ Halloween party need not be bubble, bubble, toil and trouble. Here are ideas and recipes for a unique party that your little witches and warlocks will talk about for months to come.

When planning a Halloween party, the first thing on your list is to send invitations. You can make invitations very easily using your computer and, if your children are old enough, they may like to design and print these themselves.

To avoid the frustration of people turning up at your party who have not RSVP’d, a good tip is to purposely omit the party’s commencement time from the invitation. Instead, add the line, ‘Please RSVP to know the party’s start time’ – this should significantly decrease the number of ‘gatecrashers’.

Costumes are next on the ‘to-do’ list and to children this is one of the most exciting aspects of Halloween. Before talking with your children about the options, bear the following in mind:-

• Select a costume for your child that won’t disintegrate before the night’s festivities are over and one that won’t make the child feel too hot or cold.

• For safety’s sake, ensure the costume will not hamper your child’s movement.

• Face paint is a safer alternative to a visibility-impairing mask.

• If the costume is elaborate, dress your child in simple clothing underneath. This way they can easily slip out of it to play games, take a break or visit the toilet.

Costumes can be purchased, hired or home-made. If you’re considering the latter, there are many websites with a glut of unique ideas – head for Google!

As with any party, you can either keep the décor simple with streamers and balloons or go all out and create your own Haunted House. When planning the party’s décor, bear in mind the ages of the kids who are attending. Younger kids may find just a few hanging bats sufficiently scary, while most teenagers enjoy a heavily themed venue with scary ambient music and sound effects.

Store-bought cobwebs and dimmed lights are wonderful additions to the Halloween atmosphere too. Older kids delight in sitting down to eat at a themed party table. All you need is a black or purple tablecloth, a vase of dead flowers, tealight candles and a scattering of small party favours to set the scene for a ghoulish supper. If the table is too small to accommodate all your guests, use it to display your food and beverages and provide a buffet meal.

What would a party be without food? A quick Google search will result in many Halloween recipes for some superb but gruesome sounding food including Kitty-litter Cake, Baked Bones and Dracula’s Blood Pudding. You can really get creative when it comes to Halloween food -however, it’s best to keep it simple and not too gross-sounding for the younger elementary ages.

When it comes to drinks, a Halloween party isn’t complete without a bowl of punch. Maybe you’d like to try a Blood Bath? This is made by mixing 64 ounces of cran-raspberry cocktail and four cups of apple juice with four cups of vanilla ice cream. Or perhaps you would prefer a Toxic Punch? For this wicked mix, combine four litres of chilled green lemon-lime soda, 24 ounces of orange juice concentrate, two packets of blue Kool-Aid and a few drops of green food colouring.

When planning your Halloween children’s party, prepare two to three games ahead of time. It’s also a good idea to have an extra little game or activity ready just in case. Children can be unpredictable (no way – I hear you say!) and you need to be flexible – so, if a game is not working or is not being enjoyed, having a back-up means that you can easily substitute one with another.

Many well known party games can be given a Halloween twist – for instance Pin the Hat on the Witch and Pass the Pumpkin. Halloween’s classic game however is Bobbing for Apples in a bowl of water. At our parties we quickly follow this (with faces still wet) with a game of Bobbing for Marshmallows – on a plate of flour.

Making ‘Ectoplasm’ is always a big Halloween party hit. This eerie substance is made by combining two cups of cornstarch, one cup of water and a few drops of green food colouring. It is made in just seconds, is a great consistency to play with – and guests can also take some home in a sturdy zip-lock bag!

It’s always a good idea to provide a calmer and quiet corner at parties for children who are not into games. Crayons and some colouring-in sheets along with a batch of play dough and a few biscuit-cutters will keep little hands occupied. At sites like Hello Kitty Coloring Pages you’ll find the best Kitty coloringwhile little boys would perhaps enjoy the coloring sheets at Pokemon Coloring Pages.

As an extra activity, fill a plastic jar with sweets and have each guest write their best guess as to how many are in the jar. This is a great game to play at the beginning of the party, as guests filter in. Announce the grand- winner at the end of the party – the champion wins the jar! As your guests leave, surprise them with some spooky treats to take home.

One of the simplest and most effective additions to the traditional goody bag of sweets and chocolates is the Ghost Pop. Place a square piece of white tissue over a lollipop, tie with a small elastic to make a head and then use a black marker to draw eyes on the ghost. These small treats also make great prizes for games.

Finally, remember to charge up your camera and your trusty camcorder and capture each spell-binding moment.

2 cups of water
Several drops of food colouring

In a fairly large bowl mix together the flour and water – add more flour is mixture is too sloppy (dripping). Place newspaper strips into mixture, then smooth onto blown up balloon. Cover balloon completely twice, letting dry in between layers. Do not cover the balloon’s knot. Dry in a nice, warm place for two or three days… then hold the knot and pop the balloon with a pin. Paint, glitter and decorate the balloon as is or cut in half so you have a bowl/hat shape to embellish.

Modelling/play dough
2 cups flour
1 cup salt

Soap crayons

1 3/4 cups of soap flakes

50 drops food colouring
1/4 cup water

BBQ Means Spring Is Here

Do you only BBQ a few days per year, such as the 4th of July? Outdoor grilling isn’t just a Summer time activity. If you avoid all the cliches of the year, like wearing White after Labor Day, don’t miss out to get outdoors and fire up the grill before it turns hot.

Spring offer backyard grillers some of the most favorable weather to try out their favorite bbq recipes. Insects are at a minimum and the heat off the grill will not help cook your bones along with the hot Summer sun! For a few short months you can grill outside without sweating out more liquids than you take in.

Any food you grill during the Summer only gets better in the Spring. It’s also the perfect time to try your hand at grilling Wild Game. Many hunters have some meat in the freezer from Fall hunts plus there are a lot of grocers now carrying Wild Game. Keep in mind that most Wild Game has less fat than beef, chicken or pork so it will need special attention. Mainly, that you should cook it slower and be sure not to overcook it. It should have a warm pink center.

There are a few things you will need to keep in mind before heading out in the Spring to bbq. For starters, always carefully rais the hood and check inside. Wasp, bees and other varmits may be calling your grill home now so be careful the first time you use your grill.

Electric smokers and gas grills may require an insulative blanket on cool days. This is especially true for electric smokers. Chilly Spring winds can quickly sap all the heat from an electric smoker and cause the internal temperature to fall below safe levels. Most electric smoker dealers carry these special blankets. Make sure what ever you use to wrap your smoker or grill, that it’s fire proof. It can be easy to set anything else on fire so be careful.

Make sure you take a moment to check the area around your grill. Make sure there’s not old dead winter grass around your grill. This can go up like a Roman candle from the smallest of sparks, especially if there is a wind to help it out. Always keep these areas mowed and if in doubt, hose down the area around your grill and smoker.

So just because it’s a little cold outside doesn’t mean you have to wait till Summer put up the grill. Keep them out and use them on a regular basis and enjoy the tasty treats your bbq will serve up. Try cooking your Holiday meals out on the grill. Nothing says lovin’ like fresh smoked Ham or grilled Turkey for those Holiday dinners! It’s also an excellent time to get out and try your favorite baby back rib recipes.

My Personal Tips For Preparing Seafood At Home

Preparing seafood is very easy and fun to do. The main thing to remember when preparing and cooking seafood is the seasoning.

The seasoning is the most vital element in the preparation of seafood. The main seasoning that I use when I prepare dishes like grilled shrimp is called Tony’s. Tony’s can be found at any local store such as Wal-Mart or Albertson’s. I like to season the meat before cooking, during and after.

For instance, when fixing a special meal of grilled shrimp, I put a dash of seasoning on them after thawing the shrimp. While I grill shrimp I dash spices on it as well as squeeze lemon juice on them for more zesty taste. To get a ‘tangy’ taste out of them, try using limes instead of lemons. After the shrimp are finished, I lay them out on a platter and season them lightly one more time to get a bold taste out of them.

Some people only season them once or twice, but if you season them three times the flavor stays with the food the whole time you are preparing it and it never leaves the food before you serve it. Clam chowder is the one recipe where this rule doesn’t apply since it should just be seasoned with a dash of salt and Tony’s. Clam chowder also keeps flavor more because it is a type of soup. As long as you put the seasoning in the water or liquid of the soup or gumbo you are preparing then the flavor will stay more than if you have to remove a food from the water like you do with grilled shrimp.

Crab soup is thinner in consistency than clam chowder and should be made with smaller pieces of crab, not big chunks. Once again, seasoning is important. Put in a dash of Tony’s, salt and pepper, plus a squeeze of lemon, and your guests will ask for seconds when you serve seafood dishes.

How To Prepare Chicken Recipes The Right Way

Thankfully, chicken is very versatile and can be used for planning many family meals. In addition to being high in protein and low in fat and calories, chicken is readily available, fairly inexpensive and can be prepared in a variety of delicious and nutritious ways. To get the most value buy a whole chicken and prepare it yourself. You can also take the whole chicken and cut it apart into quarters or smaller parts.

Already parted chicken can be purchased for just a little more than a whole chicken. Regardless of whether you buy a whole chicken or packages of pre-cut wings, breasts or thighs, make sure that you take a few safety precautions while you’re in the kitchen. Not only be the hands washed before working with chicken, but the utensils and counter space should be cleaned thouroughly. Uncooked chicken can hold bad bacteria, so keep your cooking space clean to avoid spreading the contamination.

Before you start cooking, rinse the chicken and pat it dry with paper towels. Be sure to always completely cook chicken. Consuming chicken that is raw or underdone can give you a bad case of food poisoning. Although this is not likely to happen, you should still err on the side of caution. There are literally thousands of chicken recipes available in cookbooks and online, so it is unlikely you will ever run out of ideas on how to prepare chicken. From grilled chicken to chicken salad, you could make a different recipe every day of the week for years before getting tired of the flavors and textures available through different cooking methods and ingredients. Grilled chicken can be cooked right on the top of the stove and is the easiest recipe to cook. Dizzle olive oil on boneless chicken breats and add salt and pepper. Prepare the breasts by searing them on a hot grill surface, approximately 5 minutes per side, until their juices are transparent, not pink. The cooked meat can then be cut up and mixed with celery and mayonnaise for an easy and delicious chicken salad, sliced for sandwiches, or covered with tomato or hollandaise sauce for a quick dinner. Some different recipes using chicken are traditional fried, with dumplings, parmesan, or teriyaki chicken.

Fresh chicken can be frozen easily, thus try to find and stock up on it when it’s on sale. Just make sure you freeze the chicken in airtight packages. You can defrost it in one of three ways, refrigerate for a couple of days, microwave on the defrost setting, or soak in a sink of water. Never leave chicken to defrost on the counter! Chicken, which can often replace beef or pork in recipes, is a tasty and healthy mainstay for millions of households.

Chicken can help in reducing your food expenditure if you are on tight budget these days like other people. Try some tonight!
